Chatham Marconi TechSmart Program
The Chatham Marconi TechSmart Program brings STEM experiments and activities into the classroom. The TechSmart Program is designed to provide enrichment materials that elucidate properties of sound waves, electromagnetic waves and communication systems by providing students with collaborative, hands-on, inquiry-based experiments and activities directed by a Chatham Marconi TechSmart STEM Educator. Aligned with Massachusetts 4th grade science standards,
“Waves and Their Applications in Technologies for Information Transfer,” the TechSmart Program enhances student understanding and contributes to a deeper knowledge of sound waves, light waves and communication systems.
The Chatham Marconi TechSmart Program contains three learning modules that correspond to the Massachusetts 4th grade science standards, Waves and Their Applications in Technologies for Information Transfer:
Module 1 – Sound Waves
Module 2 – Radio and Light Waves
Module 3 – Communication Systems
Each module presents key concepts for students to learn plus activities to support and demonstrate those key concepts.
To encourage students to think and act like scientists and engineers, students collaborate in science teams.
The three Modules are conducted on three days by a classroom visit from a Chatham Marconi TechSmart STEM Educator.
The Program culminates with a field trip to Chatham Marconi Maritime Center, including the Education Center and the Marconi/RCA Wireless Museum.
All materials for the Modules, experiments and activities are provided by Chatham Marconi.
Piloted in 2019, CMMC TechSmart has expanded in 2022-2023 to several elementary schools on Cape Cod.
