The Annual Fund is the largest single source of funding for the Chatham Marconi Maritime Center. It sustains operations and staff, enabling us to provide exciting exhibits, education programs - both in the Summer and during the school year - and special events related to our core interest: the history and future of wireless communications
Thanks to our donors, this year we were able to purchase an authentic “Creed machine” (Morse code keyer), and build an informative exhibit around it for our Museum. Our very popular donor-supported 2015 exhibit telling the story of the receiving station in World War II and incorporating an authentic Enigma encryption machine was held over for a second year. We continued to enjoy strong visitor interest at the museum and favorable comments on review sites such as Trip Advisor ®, from which we received a “2016 Certificate of Excellence”.
Our Summer Science programs for students in grades 3-9 saw registrations up once again, augmented by new scholarships for needy kids underwritten by several generous donors. And using donor funds, this Summer we expanded our capacity by adding a combination classroom/ meeting room and an office upstairs in the Education Center. Our Thursday evening Summer Speaker Series was very popular again this year with several sessions sold out in advance. In October, the second Ed Fouhy Distinguished Speaker Series presentation - featuring Ed’s television journalist daughter Beth of MSNBC - drew very favorable interest.
Looking ahead to 2017, we are completing a major new “Tubes to Transistors” exhibit in the Education Center’s Wireless Today and Tomorrow Gallery. This new interactive exhibit chronicles the technical evolution timeline behind electronic devices such as today’s cell phones. And by Summer 2017 we anticipate adding a major new exhibit in the Wireless History Gallery in the Operations Building. We are extending our Summer Science program into the off-season, with several weekly classes including participation in the FIRST Lego League Robotics Challenge and continuation of our STEM After Hours activities. 2017’s planned Summer Science offerings will make use of our expanded capacity, and we hope to further expand the donor-funded scholarship program next year.
